Carlton L. Johnson Honored by the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia
Archer Partner, Carlton L. Johnson, was recently honored by the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia as the 2019 J. Austin Norris Awardee. Mr. Johnson received the prestigious award at the Association’s Annual Awards and Scholarship Gala, held on May 18 at the Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia.
The Barristers’ Association presents the J. Austin Norris Award to an attorney of color in recognition of J. Austin Norris’ focus on improving the position of Blacks in the Philadelphia legal community. Mr. Johnson received the award in recognition of his distinguished service to the Barristers’, the legal profession and the community at large. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Barristers’ President’s Advisory Board.
JoAnne A. Epps, Executive Vice President and Provost of Temple University, presented Mr. Johnson with the award. In describing his many years of dedication to the City’s cultural organizations, the legal profession, and his focus on mentoring students, she said, “the list of activities speaks volumes about what is important to Carlton, to the breadth of his contributions, and the depth of his caring.”
With approximately 1,000 members, the mission of the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia has been to address the professional needs and development of Black lawyers in the City of Philadelphia through programs such as seminars, cultural events and publications. As an affiliate of the National Bar Association, the Barristers’ Association is an active participant in a community of practicing Black lawyers, judges and law students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Mr. Johnson’s practice is dedicated to commercial and complex litigation matters. He represents clients in a variety of matters, including, but not limited to, civil rights, labor and employment, real estate, government affairs, insurance matters, criminal matters, business torts, contractual disputes, professional negligence actions, as well as personal injury and property loss matters. A significant portion of Mr. Johnson’s practice is focused on minority and women-owned businesses. Along with litigation matters, Mr. Johnson provides general business counseling and assistance to minority and women-owned companies.
Mr. Johnson is an active member of Archer’s Diversity Committee. He is Advisor and Mentor to the Black Law Student Association of Temple University School of Law, and serves on the Advisory Boards of Temple University Center for Inclusive Competitiveness, and Million Women Mentors. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Minority Bar Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, as well as the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, African American Chamber of Commerce, Black Alumni Association of Pennsylvania State University, and Women In Tech Philadelphia Chapter.
